D-link pocket router
You are talking about something like this: What is portable WiFi router and how to use one
It works pretty much the same as a standard Netgear/LinkSys router. The only differences are that it (usually) only supports WiFi connections AND it uses a SIM card (basically a cell phone that can’t make phone calls) for the internet service.
If you have ever used your phone as a hotspot for your laptop, you have turned your phone into a pocket router. The big difference between using your phone as a hotspot and a pocket router is that you can’t really do much with the pocket router, beside turn it off and on.

Portable WiFi routers/access points are basically small scale access points with wireless capabilities. They’re made less powerful and with less processing power than your standard home access points, but the idea is you can travel and set up you own personal wireless access points with little effort.
There are various types and each may work a little different from the next, but they all have one basic function; establishing a wireless network.
I personally use the TP-LINK TL-WR700N and/or the TL-WR802N when I travel. These portable routers work 1 of 2 ways.

A2A: How do pocket routers work?
Generally, like any other router. The WAN side is either an ethernet, wifi or mobile data connection with a virtual switch that bridges to a private wifi or ethernet network. Depending on how much access you have to the internal system you can manage access with a firewall or create NAT connections. Many pocket routers run OpenWRT or other Linux-based router distributions, and you can download that and run it in a VM or on a single board computer if you are interested in learning more.

If you are referring to internet routers, pocket router is just a portable wireless connected router like a cellphone with a “hotspot” capability..
In some areas a pocket router is called and known as MiFi, which is about a small chocolate bar in size and has a SIM card in it.. It works like a public WiFi except it has a much larger range and can connect several devices and password protected..

A pocket router is a small device that hosts a mobile hotspot. It connects to a mobile network like any cell phone would via SIM but it does not have calling/texting ability nor does a pocket router run any apps.
You can think of it as a stripped down cell phone with its hotspot always turned on and since it is designed primarily to host a WiFi network it is more reliable and performs better than any smartphone’s hotspot can.
